Description:The YMCA of Greater Dayton is looking for quality childcare providers that will assist us in building strong kids, strong families and strong communities.General Function: Under the direction of the Child Care/Program Director and in accordance with the Christian nature and purpose of the YMCA of Greater Dayton, the Assistant Teacher is responsible for assisting in the planning, development and implementation of all classrooms activities. The Assistant Teacher is responsible for ensuring the children?s social, physical, spiritual and mental development in the program, as well as keeping safety and the well being of the children as a first priority. Essential Functions: The incumbent must have the competencies, relationship building skills, and proven leadership ability to successfully carry out his/her duties in accordance with the YMCA?s mission and strategic plan of the association for serving the community. Other important competencies of the Assistant Teacher include the following: ? Effectively assists in the development and implementation of weekly lesson plans that fit the children?s needs, interests and developmental levels in the classroom. ? Works cooperatively with the Lead Teacher, other staff, and partners. ? Documents attendance, absenteeism, transitions, minor disciplines and incidents for each child in the classroom. ? Is responsible for the appearance of the classroom/outside areas. Maintains the quality of supplies, materials, and equipment in the room in a neat and orderly fashion. ? Reports any broken or unsafe toys and properly disinfects toys and equipment on a regular basis in accordance with the state regulations. ? Conducts the program in accordance with Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) guidelines. ? Effectively communicates verbal and written reports to the parents. ? Possesses working knowledge of child abuse and neglect laws and follows proper reporting procedures. ? Handles discipline promptly and in accordance with the stated discipline policy. Documents and reports to the supervisor any special needs or problems of an individual child, staff or parent. ? Monitors and assists in maintaining the cleanliness of the child care and program area. ? Maintains appropriate adult/child ratio. ? Fills in with other classrooms when needed. ? Attends parent events/family programs. ? Attends scheduled staff meetings, staff activities and ongoing trainings. ? Attends in-service training events as required by Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) regulations, continued professional development through community involvement, reading and/or further education. ? Remains familiar with National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), or the National After School Assocation (NAA) accreditation requirements, and completes required documentation in accordance with Center requirements. ? Assists Lead Teacher with all required screenings and assessments within required timeframe. ? Maintains appropriate records for Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) program. ? Knows and administers the appropriate EAP (emergency action plan) for any situation, including first aid or CPR, work-related employee injuries, etc. ? Communicates to direct supervisor any concerns, needed repairs, or incidents that may need follow-up. ? Communicates any suggestions to improve the child care program and facilities. ? Takes an active role in the annual Strong Kids Campaign. ? Is courteous and gives sincere attention to members/parents by answering questions. ? Knows the names of parents, program participants and members and uses their names when speaking with them. ? Upholds guidelines as outlined in the Child Care and Employee Handbooks of the Association. ? Possesses the ability and appropriate safe driving record to drive a vehicle, safely transporting up to 14 children. ? Completes and maintains appropriate records, including incident reports, administration of medication, health history, etc. ? Protects confidential information regarding program participants, families and staff members. ? Attends designated trainings and staff meetings. ? Maintains required certifications and education. ? Carries out other duties as assigned by the Child Care/Program Director, Site Administrator, Lead Teacher and Management Staff. Know How: Education and Certifications ? Must be at least 18 years of age and possess High school diploma or GED. Associate?s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field from an accredited college or university and/or a Child Development Associate?s certificate (CDA) preferred. CPR for the appropriate age group, First Aid, Blood Bourne Pathogens, Communicable Disease, New Employee Orientation, and Child Abuse Prevention training are required within first 90 days of employment. Blood Bourne Pathogens and Child Abuse Prevention must be reviewed every 12 months. By Fall, 2008, CPR for appropriate age group required at time of hire By 2011, Associate?s degree in Early Childhood Education or CDA certificate is required at time of hire Experience ? Six months experience working in early childhood field preferred. Skills and Abilities ? With an understanding of the YMCA organization, persons in this position must be able to display sound judgment and decision making skills. Must be observant, patient, safety conscious and be able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency situation. Must have ability to stay alert to potential safety problems. Must have excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills. Must have the ability to relate to both children and adults in a positive, but firm manner. Must be knowledgeable in the growth and development stages of children with the ability to follow lesson plans.
