Bilingual Teacher's Assistant - DC/BTA/6000

Metropolitan Family Services is seeking a qualified Bilingual Teacher's Assistant that functions as a member of the teaching team working with preschool-age children. Assists the teacher in providing activities which support children in their social-emotional, cognitive and physical development, and helps maintain a safe environment. Works with diverse staff and service population.

Under the direct supervision of the Head Teacher.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Participates in maintaining the emotional environment of the classroom by speaking and listening respectfully to all children; comforting children as necessary; setting appropriate limits for children with reasonable consequences; using positive reinforcement that supports the development of children’s self-help skills.

2. Participates in promoting the cognitive development of the children by reading to children; playing games with children; assisting them on the computer; using open-ended questions; and supporting dramatic play experiences.

View Full Description children by daily sweeping the floor after breakfast, lunch and snack; sanitizing the toys monthly; rotating educational materials as dictated by the lesson plans; emptying and sanitizing the water table daily; accompanying children to the bathroom; and removing broken equipment.

4. As assigned, supervises activities in which children participate.

5. Participates with the Head Teacher in bi-weekly planning and writing of lesson plans based on developmentally appropriate practice and implementing them daily.

6. As assigned by the Head Teacher, observes and records children’s behavior on a regular basis.

7. Builds positive and on-going relationships with the parents.

8. Assumes responsibility for the classroom in Head Teacher’s absence.

9. Participates as a team member with other center staff, i.e. communicating information about children, supporting center policies, and working as a member of the Direct Service Team.

10. Participates with Head Teacher on semi-annual home visits and in semi- annual conferences.

11. Participates in teacher development opportunities, i.e. staff in-service, professional conferences, and professional organizations.

12. Cares for children during parent meetings/workshops.

13. Other duties as assigned, i.e. playground clean-up, inventory supplies.

14. Works effectively with diverse staff and service population.

Requirements:
Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from an accredited college or university. Must be Spanish/English bilingual. Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
